Teddy Manfre Ms. Blass ENG 209-001 April 24, 2017 Things Fall Apart In 1958, Chinua Achebe a famous Nigerian author publishes one of his most famous novels Things Fall Apart. The novel takes place in a Nigerian village called Umuofia. During the time that this novel is published Nigeria is being criticized by the Europeans for being uncivilized. In response, Achebe uses his brilliance in this novel to express the valued history of his people to his audience. His focus in the novel is on the pre-colonized people of the Igbo tribe and their tribal leader Okonkwo. Achebe discuses early in the novel that the tribe is outlined by many rituals and values that they follow religiously. However, when the well-respected leader Okonkwo mistakenly†¦show more content†¦For example, the one custom that is repeated throughout the novel is the sharing of the palm wine and kola nuts which is said to demonstrate the tribe’s peace. However, the Igbo have other customs that show an unpeaceful side as well, like the demanding of a virgin from the neighbor tribe Mbaino because one of the Mbaino tribesmen killed one of the Igbo wives. Among the many values that the Igbo’s follow there are rituals that they as well as other Nigerian tribes participate in. The Week of Peace is a ritual that is stated in the book, which is a week devoted to nonviolence of any kind. This sacred ritual signifies the structural ability of the Igbo tribe and demonstrates their value in peace. Unfortunately, Okonkwo mistakenly forgets that he is still in the Week of Peace and beats his youngest wife Ojiugo for leaving the hut without cooking dinner. This event sparks the turning point for Okonkwo and the Igbo’s as Okonkwo’s reputation begins to suffer and he becomes a failure as a leader. Eventually, Okonkwo would fail his clan again when he goes against the tribes Oracle’s wishes and partakes in the killing of his adoptive son Ikemefuna. The Oracle is the most valued person in each tribe and not following his orders is a huge sin. Being that Okonkwo has broken two sacred customs of the tribe, the tribe was left no choice but to send Okonkwo into exile for seven years.
